MediaWiki Extensions

Extension:Coordinate

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Coordinate

Convert geographical coordinates written in decimal degrees format to degrees format using a parser function. The function only works for N/E locations, but can be easily extended.

This can be especially useful in combination with the Geographic Coordinate attribute type of the semantic mediawiki extension.

Extension:Maps
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Maps

Maps is the MediaWiki extension that provides the ability to visualize geographic data with dynamic, JavaScript based, mapping API's such as Google Maps and OpenLayers in your wiki pages. It has build in support for geocoding, displaying maps, displaying markers, adding pop-ups, and more. Maps allows extensive customization of your maps, either per map, or via a general setting affecting all maps on your wiki.

Due to Maps modular build, modifying the mapping service of a map is as easy as changing a single map property! These mapping services include Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, OpenLayers and OpenStreetMap. These also allow you to display maps with Google Earth, OpenStreetMaps, Bing maps and others. Examples of how to use Maps can be found here.

Semantic Maps is an extension built on top of maps, and adds semantic capabilities to it. When using Semantic MediaWiki, it is highly recommended to use Semantic Maps together with maps, since it will make coordinate insertion even easier.

Both Maps and Semantic Maps are partly based on Semantic Google Maps and Semantic Layers, and are meant to replace those extensions. Maps contains all functionality of Google Geocoder, and so also replaces this extension.

Link gathering advice

There are many ways of gathering links to point to your website. The older methods of getting traffic to your websites achieving a higher google ranking for your website that are still being used today are through the use of niche directories, web directories and forums. The better and more modern are through the use of social bookmarking and social content websites and blog search engines such as Digg, Reddit, Technorati and Del.icio.us.

Create a list of social bookmarking and social content websites and blog search engines and join them. You can also join a few blogging websites and blog about your website and/or content relating to and linking to your website. Then put a list of niche directories, web directories and forums. Look for websites with material relevant to the material on your website. Put a 3-12 month plan together for collecting backlinks to your website. 75-80% of the websites pointing to your website, should have one way links to your website and 20-25% of the backlinks linking to your websites should be reciprocal links.

Web directories are recognized as "link farms." If you haven't ascertained from the name itself, "link farm" is a negative form of "web directory" and therefore may be disadvantageous when attempting to achieve a higher google rank for your website. We do have a long list of SEO friendly web directories
